Because we don’t have calcareous soils in our area, most of our clients need to continuously add calcium to help “balance” their soils.
With aerification right around the corner, it is time to think about how to best utilize bulk calcium amendments.
What is the Importance of Calcium?
- Builds strong cell walls for defense from pathogen infections and insect damage
- Driver of soil’s pH
- Maintains good soil structure
- Improves overall nutrients availability
When our clients want to improve their soil condition, we always start with an Ana-Lync soil test because it is the only soil test calibrated for the needs of finely mowed turf-grasses. It also gives a clear insight to the contrast of what is in the soil versus what is plant available.
We look at many factors in the Ana-Lync reports including calcium levels (brown, black, blue), pH, sulfur, bicarbonates, chlorides, and Ca ratios to Mg and K before determining what to recommend and at what rates. The unique thing about bulk calcium applications is that they will readjust all other soil nutrient levels.
In our area, soil calcium levels are dramatically less than the optimal target of around 1,600 ppm and it would not be practical nor wise to achieve this level in one application. Therefore, in order to help build levels appropriately and in-line with other soil nutrients, Ana-Lync reports provide “target” calcium levels that are typically set 100-200 ppm above current total ppm levels.
Once initial target levels are achieved, a new Ana-Lync report will reveal your next target levels, set at 100-200 ppm above the old target levels. This will happen until the total ppm achieves around 1,600 ppm, where the soils will then be in ideal balance.
98% Pure Calcitic Limestone
-
Raises soil calcium about 150-200 ppm
-
Only raises pH about 0.1
-
Can be applied anytime without disruption of play
Based on 10 lbs. per 1,000
Below is an example of a golf course that raised their calcium levels by 375 ppm (from 366 to 741) with only a .3 increase in their pH level using our 98G Mini, after multiple strategic applications. They also increased their CEC while decreasing their Saturation Index, allowing for better water percolation.
Because our recommended products have the highest quality calcium sources and are ground down to powder form and then pelletized for consistent size, they react faster and more efficiently in the soils versus any other competitor. Typically, 98G Mini dissolves in the soil with a 6-minute water cycle so play is not disrupted.
