Proteins are critical components in the survival of mowed-low turfgrasses because they are needed for Defense and Structure.
Defense
When turfgrasses are under attack from pathogens, they produce Pathogensis-Related (PR) proteins which is part of their systemic acquired resistance, much like the immune system in animals.
When an infection is present, the plant also produces antimicrobial proteins that attack the cell wall of the fungus or bacteria. The plant uses proteins to signal to other nearby cells that it is under attack. Lignin is then used to create a protective barricade wall, slowing the growth of infection to other areas of the plant.
Structure
Since turfgrass produces a new leaf every 7-10 days, proteins within the plant need to be constantly produced in order to be used in subsequent generations of the plant (above and below ground).
For example, some types of proteins are used in the protein photo system which makes carbohydrates. Other proteins are used in the protein ATP system that makes amino acids.
Cycle of Life
Protein synthesis formula
AMINO ACIDS + RIBOSOME = COMPLETE PROTEINS
In addition to nutrients, the plant will produce critical phytohormones in its leaves that act as a surrogate brain to determine how many proteins will be made. Unfortunately, frequent mowing removes these necessary phytohormones that regulate protein production.
